Every charge on the shield answers to something this ground stood for.
The crest is drawn as a shield rather than a seal, because Ranabima was built on a battlefield and the college has never pretended otherwise. Its charges are few and deliberate — nothing appears on it by decoration alone.
Crown above, lion at centre, lotus below: authority to defend and to govern, courage that is native to this island rather than borrowed from it, and a school that has chosen to rule its own ground through knowledge, not through war again.
The Crown
Represents the Kandyan Royal Crown, signifying the school’s location in Kandy (the last kingdom of Sri Lanka) and its connection to royal heritage and prestige.
The Lion
Symbolizes bravery, strength, authority, and vigilance, encouraging students to uphold courage and leadership.
Color Stripes
Gold/Yellow background: Symbolizes prosperity, intelligence, light, and wisdom. Navy Blue & Green bands: Represent discipline, harmony, vitality, and the school’s scenic surroundings in Gannoruwa, Peradeniya.
The Shield Base
Formed as a classic heraldic shield, symbolizing protection, defense of knowledge, and moral integrity.

Composed in Sinhala during the institution’s formative years, it honours the historic battlefield of Gannoruwa while expressing the college’s commitment to knowledge, discipline, courage, and service. Sung at every morning assembly and on ceremonial occasions, the anthem is a tradition that has united generations of Ranabimans, embodying the enduring spirit and pride of the college.

Three colours on the flag, four houses on the field.
Green, yellow, and royal blue make up the college flag itself, raised at assembly and lowered at the close of the school year. Maroon belongs to the houses alone — held apart, in tribute, as the fourth and senior house.
Bottle Green
Field and growth — the upper band, for the years spent here before anything is proven.
Golden Yellow
The crest's own gold, carried through as the middle band linking flag and shield.
Royal Blue
Named for the college itself — Royal — set as the lower band the flag rests on.
Four houses, one field of memory.
Every student is sorted into a house on their first day and stays there until their last — the smallest unit of belonging the college offers, and the one most fought over at Sports Meet.
Super Maroon
The senior house, held apart from the flag's own colours in tribute to the Sinhalese forces who fell defending this ground in 1638.
Bottle Green
Drawn from the flag's upper field. Bottle Green has carried the reputation, fairly or not, of the house that outlasts rather than outpaces.
Golden Yellow
Named for the crest's own gold. Golden Yellow is the house most associated, by its own account, with the college's academic prize list.
Royal Blue
Taking its name from the college itself. Royal Blue is the house new prefects are drawn to first, more often than any statistic explains.
