Junior Section · Grade 6–8

Four classes, forty each, by design

Every junior grade at Ranabima Royal College is kept to four classes, and every class is capped strictly at 40 students. Of the four, three are taught in the Sinhala medium and one class is set aside for the entire Tamil and Muslim community of students admitted that year.

Grade 6

Entry grade. Every student joins through the entrance examination there is no other route in, and no transfer admissions.

Grade 7

Same four-class, 40-cap structure carries forward with the same batch that entered in Grade 6.

Grade 8

Final junior year before the senior section begins in Grade 9, with subject choices still some way off.

Class D: unlike A, B, and C, Class D is not fixed to one medium of instruction. Depending on the students in a given batch, it runs either fully in English medium or as a Sinhala-mixed class decided each year by the composition of the intake.
Junior Section · Admission

The entrance examination is the only way in

Grade 6 admission to Ranabima Royal College is decided entirely by the school’s own entrance examination, conducted by the Central Province Education Department. It runs independently of the national Grade 5 Scholarship Examination a scholarship pass does not grant admission, and there is no other route into the school at any grade.

Tested for every applicant, regardless of medium.

Sat in the applicant’s own first language.

General Knowledge

General knowledge and reasoning, separate from both national school subjects.

What applicants should know

Central Province only The exam is open only to students resident in the Central Province.
Independent of the Grade 5 Scholarship Passing the national Scholarship exam does not grant entry here; this is a separate, school-specific test.
No other admission route There is no transfer, quota, or alternative pathway into Grade 6 outside this examination.
Highly competitive Seats are limited to four classes of 40 per grade, so demand consistently exceeds places.
